How you make a movie

#1 - 27. Oct 2009 15:53
Do you always use splitstream 3? Do you use splitstream 3 for special clips or rarely use it?

I wanted some input on this because I kind of find it tedious but then you can't do the special effects without it. I guess one thing is I should get a bigger HD :D

You can use it if you want to do (for example) the map grey and the weapons and models colored, or vice versa. But if you are gonna use it, you'll have to use the hud separate command so you don't get the crosshair behind the models.

Example (Weapons and models colored, maps low saturated, de_train)

And more stuff.

too many people split streams for no or little reasons, yet no one manages to do it seemlessly? all recent movies make cs look like it was badly put together

I can't see no good reason to use splitstream 3 all the time, if you ait using it correct you can clearly tell afterwards.

one example where you can tell afterwards is if you are using Magic Bullet and are using the effect on both layers then you can see that it looks odd.

also if you are using gl_overbright 1 your weapons are a little bit transparent.

People often use it without any reason.. Just to make a SHITTY transitions . 1st get the idea, than pratice on some clips and than throw it into your movie.

Look at todays movies. Models are completly different than colors @ maps. This looks odd , if you gonna use splitstreams than try to keep the same color settings for both - models & world. Try to make it as perfect as you can, so no differences noticable.

Personally I use it rarely but in my next movie I will have to put more attention onto it ;)

the intro for my movie right now looks really good and smooth, i actually know exactly what you mean by the badly put together part and i agree its really ugly. so i put a lot of effort into making it look better and it looks pretty damn good.

Ok so I found a old clip I made a few months ago, utilizing splitstreams...

http://dl.getdropbox.com/u/143598/avisynth%20script-muxed_0.mp4

Please don't flame me for the creativeness/quality, this was back when I was in the very early stage of learning how to make movies and Vegas... :D

Anyways, about that clip. In general, is there anything I can do to spice up that clip? Obviously, the color doesn't flow well because you can't see the blood. But like I said besides the creative factor, is there anything technical I can keep in mind?

One remark on the creative factor, I downloaded a huge array of video fx that I can use very effectively with splitstreams (applying the fx to the background leaving the models untouched). Is this a good idea, has it been overdone, or is it simply to simple?

Thanks for any help!

Not to sound too ignorant or to put any work on any of you, but would anyone mind presenting a good example of how this is done badly? I'm just curious, because I don't use splitstream.

holy jesus that was terrible. I gave splitstreams a try and I don't think I failed that badly.... did he not think to capture the shooting parts in splitstream 0 ? that just looks awful. thanks for the example ;)
