Finally got to see Rogue One.

It felt a bit slow. It got more interesting towards the end though. The cinematography, sound effects, and visuals were overall brilliant. The score felt a bit lackluster but I think the composer replaced Alexandre Desplat only months before the film's release. I will have to give it a second listen though in case I missed something.

Oh, and Darth Vader!

~ 7/10

Oscars 2017 incoming.

Predictions:

I feel like La La Land will win most awards. I want Arrival to win some, but I think La La Land will snatch most of them.

Kubo and the Two Strings might win best visuals and best animated film. The academy usually don't let blockbuster CGI win (Doctor Strange, Rogue One, Jungle Book) but if CGI indeed wins, I guess it'll either be Jungle Book or Doctor Strange.

Haven't seen La LaLand, but I loved Moonlight and can't imagine the Best Picture oscar being undeserved.

I heard the Deadpool 2 preview was a deleted scene from the first movie.
Not sure if that's true.

Some say it's a test scene by the new director.

It's even up on IMDB lol.

Oscar nominations should be revealed in two weeks, so here are some of my predictions:

Most technical categories, and possibly best score: Dunkirk, Blade Runner 2049, War for the Planet of the Apes, Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

Best Director: Christopher Nolan, Denis Villenueve. I am starting to love Denis. Him and Johann Johannsson remind me of Nolan and Zimmer, but more of a "low budget" version :P

Best Picture: Dunkirk, Blade Runner 2049, though I doubt any of them will win. The latter is my favourite film of 2017.

Saw The Last Jedi yesterday, and while it had some enjoyment, the structure and tone of the film felt messy. It felt too comedic at times and wanting toy merchandising. I wanted the film to be more serious and spend less time on some of the storylines. It had a lot of small unneccessary or awkward moments and it bugs me. The questions we got from TFA were barely even explored in this movie, and now the questions are even more confusing.

Oscar nominations are live!

The Shape of Water seems to be the surprise hit of the year. I haven't seen it myself, but I kind of want to see it now :P

Sad news: Jóhann Jóhannsson passed away only at the age of 48.

Some of his work: Prisoners | Arrival | Sicario

Who is Denis Villeneuve going to have as a composer now? Hans Zimmer again?

Now that his favorite composer is dead maybe he'll try something new (not trying to be mean). Hans + Ben were brought on so they could swiftly deliver something of quality (and Zimmer barely worked on it).

One week for the Oscars. Now is the time for predictions.

The prediction I feel most comfortable with is Roger Deakins winning his first Oscar for Best Cinematography on Blade Runner 2049. The dude has been nominated 14 times!

I refuse to watch the new Bladerunner until I rewatch the first. And knowing my wife's taste in movies, that's unlikely to happen in the next decade unless I murder her.

What?
