Remake Old Movies in CS:GO?

#1 - 5. May 2018 17:48
Is this something that could be justified? Would you be interested in any movie being remade? If not, what about old betas? (Looking at you, Evequal)

A few obvious things that would be changed / improved are:

- higher resolution
- better image / video quality
- frame-blending / higher fps (if the movie is THAT old)

Or maybe it would be a waste of time? :D

Just spitballing ideas.

We had a competition idea back in 2007 or 2008 where we would have people attempt to remake their favorite Style movie intro, then fragpart, then outro.  Had some interesting ideas for later uses for it.   Never happened obviously.

For your idea, From the Ashes originally was going to feature the Evequal OST, but I went in a different direction.  In a way, it is Evequal's "remake."  I think I even called the vegas file Evequalol.  :D

I always wanted to use The antikythera mechanism, but just have too many other songs I'd prefer to edit to especially if I were to ever make FTA2

Remaking / finishing old betas is probably the best way to go about this :)

I even have a couple of old betas that I never finished.

I have actually tried something very similar to this.

Back when I abandoned the Mercenaries beta in 2004, I later tried to go back to the beta and revamp the movie with better quality footage. I also attemped a new technique which I just called "weapon synth" (or "artificial in-eye"). This involved recording the weapon animations on greenscreens and superimposing them on top of HLTV footage, to give the illusion that the footage was from an in-eye demo. The process was fiddly, but it was perfectly doable.

I never got further than a small beta called simply Mercenaries Revival (ironically, this is a beta of another beta, haha). Part of the reason I abandoned it was because some of the original demos were lost, and it proved difficult to upgrade the entire movie.

Below you can see the beta footage of how some Mercenaries frags were upgraded:

For a direct comparison between the OLD and NEW footage, there are two examples that illustrate how the final footage was supposed to look (although on YouTube the quality is lower than in the videofile), with correct weapon animations and cropping. These are of Expjah and digital, below.

Of course, I have also done the reverse! In SvsC 4, the glock animation was made retro by turning it into a cartoon animation, effectively "downgrading" the original footage (and altered, e.g. the skin is changed to white so as to match Anthony's arms). This was done through rotoscoping, and you can see a short animaiton of the process below (along with Dec dying!)
