Yearly Movie Awards?

#1 - 29. Apr 2018 11:20
I want to see more yearly awards. But who would organize it and how would the judging process work? I remember there have been many discussions regarding awards in the past, with the main debates being about having public voting vs a specific jury to decide the winners, or even a combination.

Would Style-Productions be open to hosting something? Perhaps the jury could consist of several different editors from all eras, new and old. One problem could be to "find" worthy movies, since everything is based on views and upvotes, so the hidden gems would be hard to find, unless the editors themselves post their movies. Perhaps people could post suggestions over the year, or that we use the news articles to remember potential contenders.

With enough contributions there could be several categories, and the movie(s) could be awarded an SPMA if perhaps the editor of the movie is registered here?
There would have to be some fail-safes too, for example, an editor in the jury would not be allowed to vote on his/her own movie. And limit the amount of categories somehow based on the amount and types of movies?

The only other awards I could find are the  VaKarM Awards, which were mentioned in 2015. They have continued with the awards for 2015, 2016 and 2017. I believe they have continued with a public voting system.

Oh wow.  Didn't even realize Vakarm was still a thing these days.  No surprise to see that their public system still produces dubious results.  Nationalism is definitely their biggest flaw and one that pushes out many potential visitors, as most of their winners are French natives or even editors who work for Vakarm.  Good to see that Style editors make the nominee list every year though.

Yearly movie awards were a fun thing to do/be a part of when respect or reputation was the currency in our scene.  Now, movie awards do nothing for 90% of the editors that push out fluff for the sake of monetary gains.

Obviously, a reliable award system would require a panel of veteran judges (much like what we did for the internal competition in 07).  Public voting systems are just plain flawed and broken.  A majority of the voters are children/teens with next to no knowledge of moviemaking.  This in turn makes awards become a popularity contest, with the "famous youtuber" or niche community favorite winning (i.e. Eyeshield and MSTSN over at Vakarm).  As for Style being open to something like this, I'm sorry to say but it was hard to supress a laugh regarding this.  I can barely get Dan and Nik to edit 4 minutes in 9 months let alone take the time to vote for yearly movies.  Plus as always, we're quite pessimistic regarding much of the movie scene in this era of twitch clips and VOD compilations.

Movie awards are just another nostalgic thing from our past that sounds fun on paper, but is a pain in the ass and extremely moot when executed.  No one cares about a few extra hundred views from winning a movie award when 100k views are what bring in the partner cash.  Additionally, reputation doesn't matter anymore (which is what's gained when you win an award).  This is quite obvious by the cookie cutter clips youtubers push out 2 days after a tournament ends.  If they cared about what adults or actual video editors think about them, their quality of work would be vastly different.

"Let the past die. Kill it if you have to."

I suppose that is a fitting quote, which is a shame.

hmm, after rereading my post, i realize that I probably sound like an elitist asshole.  What I meant to say is that I would absolutely love to engage in movie awards again.  the problem is that the structure and format of many CS movies these days are not as artistic as we prefer.  They are overly clean with minimal artistic touches applied to them in order to appease the general masses.  this makes for flicks that don't really standout in a way that makes them discernible in a competition.  this is a result of a handful of editors putting out multiple movies a week.  the quality just isn't there.

That being said, I've seen one or two movies that have made an effort to show creativity and artistic value.  Perhaps Style can make a vlog every year that commemorates the few editors that do this.

Now there's an idea.

That could be an interesting substitute. A way to highlight the "hidden gems" so to speak. But we will have to find those movies first of all :P

In a way, there is already a sort of public voting in the form of youtube views, like/dislike ratio and/or upvotes. And as you pointed that, that is based on how big a fanbase/popularity you got.
